Anyone entering higher education after vocational training and several years of work should consider a funding opportunity currently open for applications. On 14 October 2026, Seezeit highlighted the application round for the Aufstiegsstipendium, a scholarship for experienced professionals. Online applications are possible until 30 November 2026. The programme may therefore also be relevant to professionals who have just started studying in Konstanz.

Professional achievement matters

Under the rules published by the responsible foundation, SBB, applicants need completed vocational training, at least two years of subsequent employment in total, and evidence of outstanding professional performance. This can take the form of excellent training or advanced vocational qualification results, a qualifying competition achievement, or a substantiated nomination by an employer. School grades do not determine eligibility to apply. There is no formal age limit either. Individual evidence must fit one of the recognised routes.

The programme supports a first academic degree. Applications are possible before starting university or during the first or second semester. Both full-time degrees and degrees taken alongside employment can qualify. The SBB guidance on eligible programmes covers public and officially recognised universities in Germany, other EU countries and Switzerland. For particular study arrangements, the foundation recommends clarifying eligibility in advance.

What support is available

For full-time study, monthly funding currently consists of €992 plus an €80 book allowance, totalling €1,072. A childcare allowance of €160 per child is available for children under 14. A degree taken alongside employment is supported with €3,045 per calendar year. Funding is independent of income. The programme also offers seminars, regional discussion groups and networking opportunities.

Apply now, receive funding later

The SBB timetable, updated in May 2026, places the current round in selection procedure 2027/I. Interviews are planned between 15 February and 13 March 2027, with admission to the programme scheduled for April 2027. Financial support cannot begin before admission. Applicants should therefore avoid counting the scholarship as available funding for the current winter semester.

The selection process starts with an online questionnaire. Successful completion of the first stage is followed by a competency assessment and, where applicable, a selection interview. Supporting evidence is checked during the process; submitting an application does not amount to an award. Useful preparation includes organising qualification certificates, employment periods and information about the intended degree.

From a student perspective, the scheme offers a practical route for people whose educational history already includes professional experience. The relevant question is therefore not whether a CV follows the conventional path directly from school to university. What matters is whether the published conditions are met and whether funding can be secured through other means until possible admission to the programme.
