A deep excavation, exposed reinforcing steel, formwork and a tower crane: photos taken on 26 October show construction work on the University of Konstanz campus. Several building and infrastructure projects are under way there. No project sign is visible in the photographs, so the excavation cannot be confidently attributed to one specific project.
Building X is designed to make room for renovation
Building X, a lecture, seminar and office building, is being constructed by the main campus entrance. The university describes it as a replacement building whose space will allow existing buildings to be renovated. The planned 9,000-square-metre complex includes a 400-seat lecture hall, 39 seminar rooms, 140 student workspaces and offices with capacity for 190 workstations. It will also have a cafeteria and an events hall. The university currently expects completion in 2027. See the university’s project overview.
Forum Konstanz as a new campus gateway
Forum Konstanz is being built as a centre for science and society in building WA. The university says it aims to bring people and ideas together. Adjacent to the workshop building W, the Forum is intended to form a new “gateway to the university”. It will add a place for exchange between science and society alongside the campus’s teaching and office space.
A large heat pump will use lake water
Another construction site is part of the university’s energy infrastructure. Large heat pumps are being installed in an underground building between buildings E and F and the children’s centre. According to the university, the system is expected to cover more than two-thirds of the campus’s heating demand with heat from Lake Constance from 2027. The university has published separate notices on excavation, retaining structures and periods of particularly noisy work. University construction notice dated 30 January 2026.
Three projects with different purposes
The projects do not all serve the same purpose. Building X is intended to make relocations and renovation of existing buildings possible; the Forum will create additional space for exchange; and the heat pump will change the campus energy supply. Together, they show how the university is developing its teaching spaces, public engagement and technical infrastructure. Timetables remain forecasts. The university groups current construction notices on its campus development page.
